before
This large garden was very blank. There was a patio at the house and round the corner, the downstairs rooms looked out onto a fence. The site is very sloped and some areas were so steep it was a struggle to cut the grass. Apart from the odd rabbit there was very little wildlife using the garden, the family weren’t using the area at all.
The owners wanted to create a tranquil family garden, that could be used by the children safely and by the grown up to relax and entertain. The clients didn’t want to do too much maintenance. It was important to them to be able to attract birds and wildlife into the garden to enjoy too. The hot tub was to be relocated around the side to have a secluded area.
the design
The design set to make some useable flat areas with gabions, this allowed for an entertaining/ dining area, with outdoor kitchen and pergola. A deck near the rear of the garden created a relaxing area with views of the garden. The beds and lawns were designed to have a curve to lead your eye through the garden, to encourage use. A great kids area was designed with playhouse, gym bars, trampoline and on ground pool.
after
The garden is now a delight for the family to use. There are different areas to enjoy the garden, and feel connected to nature, whilst having a feeling of privacy. The bank was laid with wildflower turf which provides lots of colour, interest and a great habitat for pollinators. The kids have an amazing area to play, whilst the adults can watch in a relaxed patio. The garden now feels part of the overall house and really increases its appeal by carving the slopes into useable spaces.
